Chandini Chowk to China Review

Date seen: 19-01-2008

rating 2.5/5

Cast Akshay Kumar and Deepika

Director Nikhil Advani

Nikhil Advani’s barmy musical Chandni Chowk to China is the very first Bollywood kung fu action comedy — an inspired mating of the biggest box-office draws in Asian cinema, the Bollywood romance and the old-fashioned Hong Kong martial arts movie. The fact that Advani ends up with a two-and-a-half hour Adam Sandler movie is horrifying.
Chandni Chowk is so thoroughly absurd I can hardly bring myself to describe it. Akshay Kumar (India’s Sandler) is a humble potato peeler in a backstreet stall in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. His father boots him in the backside for being an idiot and he lands two miles away in front of a pair of Chinese tourists who think he is the reincarnated soul of a Chinese warrior god. The hapless clown is duly whisked off to a peasant village in China where he is expected to save the locals from a ruthless psycho, Hojo (Gordon Liu), who decapitates people with a bowler hat

Almost everyone has an mp3 player or an iPod today and listening to music is slowly becoming the one thing that connects everyone together. Hindi music in India is reaching a turning point where mp3 players are becoming an invaluable accessory, just like what a tube of lipstick is to a girl or cricket is to a boy.
